3. Scroll down in the Language settings for the system listbox and check the Indic checkbox.

4. Click Apply to complete installation

2. Goto Languages tab in Regional and Language Options dialog

3. Check the Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai) checkbox

Some users of Windows 98/NT/ME/2000 Windows NT may find that even with a Tamil Unicode font installed and the browser correctly set to View > Encoding > Unicode, some of the Tamil letters are incorrectly displayed. An example is given above.

This may be due to the earlier version of usp10.dll used in these operating systems. To correct this, it may be necessary to update the usp10.dll file in Windows. To do this,

1. Download the latest version of the usp10.dll file. [one of the sites for this download is here Download updated version of usp10.dll (zip file). Alternatively, you may download the file from the Microsoft site here - save the downloaded .exe file - double click on the file - give a temporary folder address - the program will extract a few files into the folder - of these ‘usp.zip’ is the one you will need - discard the other files - unzip usp.zip - it will give two files viz: usp10.dll and readme.txt ]

2. Go to the Windows folder and find the file named usp10.dll (usually in the System and/or System32 sub folder). Rename the file to a different name say usp10.old .

3. Place the newly downloaded usp10.dll file in the same folder as the renamed usp10.old file.

6. Re start the computer.

Installing and using Unicode font is just like any other font. In Win2000 or WinXp, there won’t be any problem as they have Unicode support.

WinXP is shipped with a Tamil Unicode font “Latha”. ( You can also download latha.ttf file from here )

As we are familiar with Anjal type key layout, you can use eKalappai to write Unicode. Now eKalappai is equipped with Unicode driver.

If you use Murasu, you can select any TSCu…font to write Unicode.

Win98 is not Unicode enabled. But you can read websites or web mails (like yahoo groups). Only prerequisite is: You should have IE Version 5 or above.

When you find any website or web mail in Unicode, simply change encoding by selecting View » Encoding » Unicode (UTF-8) or right click and select Encoding »Unicode (UTF-8).

3. Just open Notepad and start typying in tamil.

4. Alternatively you can use the following hot-keys to switch to tamil from any application.

ALT + 1 »> To type in English

ALT + 2 »> To type in Tamil TSCII

ALT + 3 »> To type in Tamil Unicode

3. If you have gmail account, it is excellent, otherwise no problem. This will work உங்களிடம் ஜிமெயில் கணக்கு இருந்தால், சாலச் சிறந்தது. இல்லாவிட்டாலும் பரவாயில்லை. பணி செய்யத் தடையில்லை.

4. Open your Internet Explorer. Change as follows: View - Encoding - Unicode (UTF-8) உங்கள் இணைய உலாவி இண்டெர்நெட் எக்ஸ்ப்ளோரரைத் திறந்து View - Encoding - Unicode (UTF-8) என்ற மாற்றத்தைச் செய்யுங்கள்.

5. Open your mailbox உங்கள் அஞ்சல் பெட்டியைத் திறவுங்கள்.

6. Select unicodetamil in ‘K’ icon sitting on the right side of your Windows taskbar. It shoud turn to red color Tamil ‘a’ now உங்கள் விண்டோசின் வலப்புறம் ‘K’ என்று உள்ள ஐகானைச் சொடுக்கி, unicodetamil என்று மாற்றுங்கள். அது இப்போது ‘அ’ என்று சிவப்பு எழுத்தில் காட்டும்.

That is all, you see Unicode Tamil falling from your sharp fingers அவ்வளவுதான், யுனிகோடு தமிழ் உங்கள் சாதுர்ய விரல் வழி விழுவதைக் காணலாம்.
